Junior Entrepreneur Project

J.E.P. by James Wolfe

The Junior Entrepreneur Project is a programme where children across the country can take on the job of an entrepreneur.

This very enjoyable project has helped us understand entrepreneurship and enterprise. It has helped us to act with the creativity and independence needed to be a successful entrepreneur.

The J.E.P. project has aided us with many of our subjects. In English we’ve improved our research and writing and in Maths, we’re adding up our pricing and profits. The poster design also ties in with our art.

We began this ten week project in January. In week one, we learned about being an entrepreneur. We also talked about local and famous entrepreneurs and about the qualities needed to be an entrepreneur.

On week two, we identified each other’s strengths with the helping hands activity. We exchanged potential product ideas and eventually narrowed the selection down to six ideas. These were the “Pencil Man”, “Leprechaun Flowerpots”, “Calendars”, “Event Bands”, “Perfect Pencil Holders” and “Then and Now”.  We presented our products to the dragons on January 16th. The dragons were Ms. Jordan, Luke Hanley, Ms. Gleeson and Mrs. Leahy. The dragons decided that the product with the widest appeal would be “Garrydoolis NS: Then and Now”, so that became our “big idea!”

During week three, Mrs. Leahy returned to speak about “Emly Free Range” which is her business. It was helpful information for our mini-business.

On week four, we did market research. We surveyed past pupils and family members to see how many we might sell. Sixty-five people showed interest is buying our book!

And now, with great pleasure, we launch our book,” Garrydoolis NS: Then and Now”. It is a book that contrasts past school life with school in the present day.

It is on sale at the school for €7 or 2 for €12. Orders may be placed with senior pupils.
