On Monday, we took part in a virtual workshop with Dr. Ken. He taught us about the Greeks and their beliefs in the four elements of earth, fire, air and water. He demonstrated some experiments for us – some of which, involving fire eating, we were told not to try! – and then we tried to replicate some of his results. We explored air pressure and made balloons and cardboard stick to glasses of water. We also looked at centre of gravity and learned how to make a 7Up can balance on its edge.

On Tuesday, we looked at forces and reactions. We learned that every force has an equal and opposite reaction. We experimented with this by creating balloon rockets and flew them on string from one side of the room to the other. We learned about potential and kinetic energy and how one can change to the other.

On Wednesday, we experimented with yeast and sugar. We mixed both and added warm water and a bit of movement in order to create a reaction. We caused the yeast to ferment and release a gas. This gas was used to inflate a balloon that we had placed over the mouth of the bottle we used.

On Thursday, we made catapults out of cardboard boxes and paintbrushes. We learned about how force being placed on an object can give it potential energy. When it is released, it can change to kinetic energy. We used our catapults to fire marshmallows, with varying degrees of success!

On Friday, Ms. Jordan came into our classroom and we demonstrated them for her. We also examined potatoes that we have been cultivating since September. These potatoes were cut in half and rubbed on various surfaces. After they were put beside heat, they grew varying amounts of bacteria. We found that the potato that was rubbed on a human hand grew the most bacteria. This showed us the importance of washing and sanitising our hands properly at all times.
