On January 29th children from classes second to sixth attended the production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” in Fermoy. This was a magnificent production and it was a marvellous experience for the children to hear such wonderful music and singing.
Tom Healy and Martin Ryan came back to Garrydoolis – this time as transition year students who wished to coach the children as part of the Gaisce Awards. This aspect of the awards comes under the heading of Community service.
They come to the school each Thursday for three quarters of an hour and are very dedicated and committed to teaching the children the skills of hurling. It is to their credit that they come very well prepared and I have no doubt that they will be worthy recipients of their awards,
James Ryan, Limerick Senior footballer and hurler comes to coach hurling in the final term as part of the G.A.A. coaching scheme.
Two past pupils, Lisa Ryan & Lena Ryan did one week’s work experience in the school in May and it was a pleasure to have them back in the school.
Garrydoolis School was asked to be involved in the Mulkear LIFE project to enhance the habitats of the Atlantic Salmon, Otter and Sea Lamprey.
Ruairi O Conchuir and Glen Wightman visited the school on 21st January and gave a marvellous presentation to the children about river life and they will be back later in the year to take the children on a field trip to the river. This project is funded by the E.U. The school went on a field trip to the Dead River near Solohead in April as part of this project.
Niall Boland, once again got two more laptops from IBM as part of the Online Demand Community Scheme in operation by the company. He logged the hours he spent in the school doing voluntary work and when he had reached a total of fifty hours in the year he was granted two laptops for the school. He ensures that all computers are operating and helps with the maintenance of the computers and the sourcing of associated materials.
The Limerick Fire service, under the skillful management of Mr. John Mulready, once again visited the school on 12th March. He was ably assisted by Michael Leonard.
The children got to see inside a fire engine and they enjoyed the informative presentation.
First penance was held in the church on Thursday 11th March and First Holy communion will take place on Saturday 8th May. Again thanks are due to Fr. Burns and Mr. Keogh for all the time and energy they are putting in to these occasions. The high turnout of parents is testament to the value they put on this aspect of their childrens’ education. The children who received First Holy Communion were: Joan Beary, Jessica Dillon, Jack Mulcahy, David Wolfe & John Egan.
On 30th April, a presentation was made to Mrs Pauline Quinn in honour of the many years of service she gave as secretary/caretaker in the school. Many thanks from all involved with the school for her good humoured willingness to undertake any task asked of her.
Congratulations to the school relay team who came second in the Kilteely/Dromkeen/Garrydoolis Community Games Sports held in May. On the team were; Kyran O’Donnell, Ann Ryan, PJ Butler, Conor Egan & Josh Davern. Congratulations to all the others who competed on the day.
In the Cumann na mBunscoil league, we lost to Bohermore in a great game of hurling and beat Kilteely. Our next match is against Kilteely, to played in early June.
Fr. Burns is organising a graduation mass for 6th Class pupils and their parents, provisionally booked for June 17th in Garrydoolis NS.
